Port Stephens Palliative Care Outreach Fundraising Committee is pleased to announce a donation that will fund a scholarship to Flinders University Adelaide for Palliative Care Nursing Staff in the Port Stephens area to further their education in palliative care.
Scholarship is open for any nurse working in Palliative Care in the Port Stephens area
The scholarship will honour Rosemary Toscano and Barbara Arathoon, the founding members of the Palliative Care Outreach Fundraising Committee, who worked tirelessly for many years to raise money to support and benefit palliative care patients in the Port Stephens area.
In 1993 this fundraising committee was formed to raise funds to have two dedicated Palliative Care rooms built at Tomaree Community Hospital.
The Constitution of the fundraising committee stated that all funds were to be used in Port Stephens.
With the objective reached in 1995 with the opening of two rooms with an ensuite, the Fundraising Committee became Incorporated as the Port Stephens Palliative Care Outreach Fundraisers under the guidance of Rosemary Toscano and Barbara Arathoon.
The aim was to purchase equipment such as electric beds, air mattresses, oxygen concentrators and special Roho cushions (to prevent pressure areas) to enable patients with life limiting illnesses to remain comfortably at home.
The money for the scholarship was mostly donated from the generosity of bereaved families of the Port Stephens Shire over the years.
Additional donations can also be made to the Scholarship Fund through Flinders University in Adelaide.
