Awareness campaign about dementia support

Dementia Support Australia (DSA), funded by the Australian Government and led by HammondCare, offers relationship-based case management to improve the quality of life for those experiencing behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The free service has seen a significant increase in referrals, with over 18,000 cases in 2022. Referrals continue to climb this year, indicating the growing demand for support.

Marie Alford, Head of Dementia Professional Services at DSA, stated that up to 90 per cent of people living with dementia will experience BPSD at some point in their journey with the illness.

DSA launched a national campaign titled “Dementia can affect us all” in order to raise awareness and encourage carers to reach out for support.

When a person living with dementia is experiencing changes to their behaviour, DSA works with carers and patients to understand the causes and help them improve their quality of life.

DSA states that behaviour support starts with understanding. Every person is different, and so are their needs. Their goal is to provide carers and care network with the tools to better understand the causes of behaviour in people living with dementia.
