World Hospice and Palliative Care Day 13th October 2018. Do you know someone who is making a significant contribution to developing palliative care in a low- or middle-income country?
This could be someone directly affected by serious illness, a healthcare professional, volunteer or even a government official.
This year, the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance will recognise the work of these extraordinary individuals through the Palliative Care Champions Award which will be announced on World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. There will 10 awards in total.
Eligibility:
- Nominees must show a significant contribution to hospice and palliative care
- Nominees must work or live in a low- or middle-income country (as defined by the World Bank)
- Staff or trustees of any of the three global palliative care associations (IAHPC, ICPCN and WHPCA) are not eligible.
To nominate someone:
Send a short nomination letter of fewer than 300 words, telling us why your nominee should be recognised as making an extraordinary contribution to palliative care, as well as a note of acknowledgement from the nominee. The categories are as follows:
- Healthcare professional
- Non-medical palliative care worker (spiritual care worker, social worker, chaplain etc).
- Civil society leader (at national, local or community level)
- Policy or advocacy champion
- Older person champion (aged over 60)
- Youth champion (aged under 25)
- Person accessing palliative care
- Family member or carer
- Disruptor (someone who speaks the truth to power and challenges the status quo)
- Allied champion (someone not working directly in palliative care, but who speaks out in support of palliative care).

World Hospice and Palliative Care Day is organised by a committee of the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance, a network of hospice and palliative care national and regional organisations that support the development of hospice and palliative care worldwide.
