Lara McIntyre, Chair of the Palliative Aged Care Network (PACN), a professional network supported by Palliative Care NSW, recently presented at the Palliative Care Nurses Australia (PCNA) Biennial Conference in Melbourne. The theme of the conference was Clinical Excellence, Connection and Culture – The Art of Palliative Care Nursing. This national conference brought together healthcare professionals, researchers, educators, and experts from the field of palliative care.
Lara’s presentation Aged Care Reform in Australia, Unintended Consequences, was a whistle-stop tour of the aged reforms generated from the Royal Commission and their impacts on the sector. It was presented during the Plenary 3 session: The Critical Role of nurses in enabling improved access to and provision of palliative and end of life across all care settings.

The Plenary 3 session also featured The Margaret O’Connor Oration, delivered by Professor Patricia Davidson, Vice-Chancellor and President, University of Wollongong who spoke on Strengthening the nurses voice to lead change at the patient, service and policy level and asked how delegates can see this happen. Followed by Anne Skipper AM, Chair, Silverchain Group, discussing Nursing leadership in Australia and enabling all to work to full scope of practice. Kate Munro, Nurse Manager Reflective Practice, Hunter and New England Local Health District, shared her experiences in Strengthening your nursing voice. Camilla Rowland, CEO, Palliative Care Australia looked at key policy issues in the next 5 years.
