On the 28th August, Palliative Care NSW (PCNSW) received an incredibly generous donation of $10,000 from the Liverpool Rangers Soccer Club on behalf of the Hughes family. This donation was in recognition of the outstanding palliative care that Ron Hughes, a Life Member of the club received. That outstanding care was delivered by teams at the Liverpool Specialist Palliative Care ward, the Camden Palliative Care Unit and by the Wollondilly Community Nursing & Community Palliative Care Team, all located within South Western Sydney LHD. A percentage of this donation will go back to directly support and recognise these teams, while also supporting the ongoing community engagement, professional development and advocacy programs that PCNSW delivers.
The soccer club held a memorial round as a key fundraiser on the 26th and 27th of July in honour of Ron’s life and contribution, as well as the significant contribution of his family to the club over many years. The community came out in force, giving generously, with players also wearing limited edition jerseys and socks, commissioned specially for this occasion.
“It was an absolute pleasure to spend a Saturday in July at Ireland Park meeting Ron’s family, the local community and hearing about the impact that Ron had on so many people. Talking to Ron’s family confirmed what we already know, that access to high quality, person and family centred specialist palliative care is so important for those who need it. While it was not surprising to hear about the significant and positive impact the different palliative care teams had on Ron and his family, it is just so nice to see the recognition of these highly skilled and compassionate healthcare professionals and teams. Those working in palliative care do not do it for the recognition, but it sure is nice when it happens and I know how delighted these teams are to know that they made a difference. The impact Ron had on his community will now continue, with this donation helping to support the local palliative care teams and ongoing community awareness.
