HammondCare is strengthening inpatient palliative care services at Neringah Hospital while progressing the redevelopment of Greenwich Hospital into a purpose-built Centre of Excellence for complex care across Northern Sydney.
Together, these projects support continuity of care for patients and families across the Northern Sydney Local Health District and respond to the growing demand for specialist palliative and complex care.
Neringah Hospital: a central service for Northern Sydney
Neringah Hospital, located in Wahroonga, has played a longstanding role in providing inpatient subacute palliative care to people across Northern Sydney. Its specialist multidisciplinary team delivers comprehensive, holistic care for people with life-limiting illness and support for their families.
What the expansion at Neringah Hospital includes
Neringah Hospital is increasing its inpatient palliative care capacity through the refurbishment and activation of additional clinical space within the existing hospital building. This expansion supports the temporary relocation of inpatient palliative care services from Greenwich Hospital during redevelopment, while maintaining safe, high-quality care for the Northern Sydney community.
The expansion includes:
- Refurbished inpatient palliative care beds, including 13 new ensuite rooms, bringing the total number of inpatient palliative care beds at Neringah Hospital to 32
- Additional clinical and administrative space to support inpatient teams
- A single, integrated inpatient palliative care service, bringing together medical, nursing, allied health, volunteer and pastoral care teams in one location. This service is co-located with the Neringah specialist community palliative care team, supporting continuity of care and enabling care to be provided either at home or on site at Neringah.
By consolidating inpatient palliative care services at Neringah during this period, HammondCare is able to ensure continuity of care, with no change to existing referral pathways. Additional transport and other support measures have been put in place to minimise the impact of this temporary relocation for patients and families.
Importantly, the expansion at Neringah enables inpatient palliative care services to continue without interruption while major construction works progress at Greenwich.
Building the future of palliative care in Northern Sydney
Together, the expansion of inpatient palliative care at Neringah Hospital and the redevelopment of Greenwich Hospital represent a coordinated, forward-looking approach to meeting the growing need for specialist palliative and complex care across Northern Sydney.
