Aged Care Taskforce Final Report

The Aged Care Taskforce report has recommended government should be the primary funder of clinical support in aged care – such as nursing care, but recommends changes such as co-contributions for living costs, that cover things like cleaning and accommodation, be increased for those who can afford to pay, as the primary means of making aged care financially sustainable now and into the future. The taskforce noted that 94% of direct care needs are and will still be funded by taxpayers, however, they stated that everyday living costs should be met by those who can afford it.

There is also a recommendation of a strong safety net to ensure high quality care is accessible for everyone, protecting older women, those in regional and rural areas and vulnerable populations entering aged care.

During the presentation on the Aged Care Taskforce report held members of the taskforce also highlighted how important it is to simplify the aged care system for consumers, removing the complex administration associated with entering aged care.

There has been broad support from the Aged Care Sector for the taskforce recommendations.

Palliative Care NSW believes that aged care and palliative care will continue to operate cohesively and effectively through ongoing innovation and policy development.
