Tweed Palliative Support Celebrates 25 Years of Service

Tweed Palliative Support (TPS), a multi-award-winning charity based in Murwillimbah, has celebrated 25 years of service to their Northern Rivers community. Founded in 1998, TPS has since trained over 400 carers, provided care to patients and their families, hosted support groups, and provided Sunshine Days to patients who have had a cancer diagnosis. Since 2015, TPS has also operated Wedgetail Retreat, NSW’s only independent and stand-alone community hospice and respite care centre.

TPS provides support services for people with a life-limiting illness. Their “hospice-at-home” service is designed to keep people in their homes for as long as possible by providing assistance with a range of tasks, including transporting patients to medical appointments, supplying medical aids and providing respite to carers.

At the end of 2023, TPS held a well-deserved celebration of their 25 years of service. Current and original carers, committee members and volunteers came together to recognise this momentous achievement. “We are very fortunate to enjoy enormous community support so we can continue to provide our support services free of charge,” says Deirdre Stewart, a member of the TPS Management Committee.

One of their dedicated full-time volunteers, Edna Gorton, recently celebrated her 90th birthday. In an interview with the ABC, Edna said that volunteering at the TPS Op Shop “is just really my life, and I love it”.

Palliative Care NSW would like to extend their congratulations to TPS, and thank them for the tremendous work they continue to do for their community.
