What you’ll be doing

The NSW Public Health System Nurse’ & Midwives’ (State) Award states that the Nurse/ Midwifery Unit Manager is ‘the registered nurse in charge of a ward or unit or group of wards or units in a public hospital or health service or public health organisation’ and is responsible for the coordination of patient services, unit management and staff management.

As the manager of the unit the purpose of the Nurse/ Midwifery Unit Manager role is to;

  • Lead, direct and coordinate patient care, at the ward/unit level.
  • Ensure the practice of nursing/midwifery is safe and efficient, while maintaining standards of care.
  • Manage the business/management processes of the ward/unit.

Selection Criteria 

  1. Registered Nurse with a current licence to practice from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
  2. Relevant tertiary qualifications or working towards the same; or alternatively relevant work experience or combination of qualification and work experience.
  3. Demonstrated experience in the relevant specialty of the ward/unit.
  4. Demonstrated skills in leadership and management within the healthcare setting.
  5. Demonstrated ability to evaluate clinical services and manage change.
  6. Proven ability to create and maintain a positive workplace culture and articulate and achieve a vision for nursing/maternity services.
  7. Demonstrated computer literacy and confidence in using Microsoft and health care information systems.
